the meaning of color

Your response to color is personal and subjective. Color comes in warm and cool tones and each has its own aesthetic and emotional qualities.

white
White is a powerful color which intensifies other colors when placed side by side with them. White is pure, calming, simplistic and provides a balancing element when working with a variety of colors.

blue
Blue is tranquil, familiar and comforting, which is why people often say blue is their favorite color. Warm blues have hints of red in them, leaning towards lilac and mauve while cool blues are refreshing and contemporary. Blue and white are a fresh and timeless combination - think of blue & white china. Blue in a business context, conveys trust and loyalty which is why policemen wear blue uniforms and the navy suit is a corporate clothing staple.

red
Red is a sensual color and the eye is immediately drawn to red - it signifies excitement, energy, passion and romance, Too much can be overwhelming but the right combination can have the effect you desire. In China, red symbolises good luck, in India it represents purity and in Eastern cultures, when combined with white, it signifies joy.

pink
Light pinks in designs represent softness and delicacy and combine well with crisp white and pale blues. Deep fuchsias, on the other hand are seen as bright, exciting and energetic. Combine fuchsia with vibrant tangerine for a vivid impact.

purple
Ranging from pale lavender to deep aubergines, purple is a color which can evoke a variety of emotions. Bedrooms are often painted in light mauve to create stillness and peacefulness. Combined with rich fuchsias, lime greens and vivid tangerine, deep purple can take on a tropical feel, of lushness and luxury.

burgundy
Elegance, richness, refinement - all associations we have with the color burgundy. Combine with antique gold for a stunningly rich effect.

yellow
Yellow is a cheerful color and one naturally thinks of sunshine and spring (fresh daffodils) when yellow is mentioned. Combined with lime and bright greens, yellow evokes feelings of happiness, like a garden in bloom on a warm summer's day.

orange
Like yellow, orange is a cheerful and happy color, representing warmth, enthusiasm and vibrancy. A single element of orange can lift any serene color - think of orange pumpkins with tan autumn leaves or tangy orange with powder pink.

brown
When we speak of browns, we speak of warm, earthy colors - warm autumn hues, light beige timber, terracotta tiles and desert landscapes. We feel comforted by these hues and in touch with nature. The cooler tones, such as birch, granite and chocolate brown are more modern - think espresso bars and contemporary cafe decor.

green
Like blue, green is also a calming color but also represents life and growth like new leaves on a budding plant. It is commonly associated with the natural environment and provides a great backdrop for the vivid hues of nature's floral palette. Lime can add life and vitality to any palette.
